Nightlog
For the past few weeks, I’ve been trying David Allen’s GTD methodology to see if it works for me.
And I must say it’s actually doing the trick.
One of the things I’m forcing myself to do is jotting down — on a piece of paper, a note on my mobile, or a text file on my computer — everything that comes to mind: it’s a great way to always be relaxed and in control, because you know you’re not going to lose that great idea you just had.
The above behaviour led me to an obvious consequence: keeping a notepad — I’m a Moleskine junkie, but any piece of paper will do it — next to my bed.
Why? Because when you go to bed, you’re — or at least, I am — more inclined to do a recap of your day and empty your mind before dreams start kicking in, so you’ll often come up with interesting new ideas, solutions to issues you had during the day, and so forth.
So, to make sure you don’t lose any of those precious pre-sleep-thoughts, you’d be better off taking a scrap of paper and writing a couple of keyword so, in the morning, you’ll remember what you were thinking about the night before. You don’t need to write down full-sentences — you’ll probably be half-asleep anyway, so there’s no way you’re going to write meaningful sentences ;) –: as I said, a couple of keywords are more than enough.
So get a notepad and a pencil and put them next to your bed…you’ll be grateful you did!
